From the Pastor – December 2024

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.
Isaiah 9:6

It is that time of year again.  Pumpkin spice lattes give way to Christmas carols, hot chocolate, and candy canes.  The church pews swell with happy, familiar
faces.  The whole world seems to love this time of year.  It also seems like the whole world tries a little harder this time of year to get along and to express
gratitude.

This is also a very busy time of year.  We all have plenty of family traditions we feel that we need to uphold.  There are also work parties, block parties, community celebrations-the list never ends! All these celebrations are rooted in a singular purpose; that God found humankind in a state, and gave humankind the gift of becoming one of us.  And, in  becoming one of us, we found God to be the better person.   But, the gift does not stop there.  With the gift of Christ’s own presence, we have the opportunity to  become more like him. In turn, we share the grace we have received.

We can miss the gift in all the busyness of this season. To keep our appointments, traditions, party plans and never be changed would be to major in the minors.  Remember, Christmas is about grace that comes from Christ. This gift is meant to be shared.

So, what do we do?  How do we navigate this month, get what we need to get accomplished and still grow in faith?!  I say, have a plan.  The best plans begin with considering what is most important.  How will you grow in faith?  How will you love your  family? How will you love your neighbors and the strangers on the street?  How will you do this and improve your health?  Make a plan  that balances work, your own rest, and the people you care about.

With all this being said, the church has wonderful plans for you this month. You are well acquainted with the Christmas concert, the Women’s bazaar, a float in the Christmas parade, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and, of course, the Christmas Eve candlelight service.  But we have something new!  The aim is to focus your mind and spirit on growth at Christmas time. We will be holding Advent Chapel three Wednesdays in December from 12:15 to 12:45. This is lunch time, so you are welcome to bring a sack lunch and eat while we worship.

Often less is more elegant–it’s ok to say no, especially around the busy time of Christmas.  Make a plan to grow in faith, love your family and your
neighbors.  Experience again grace that is too good not to share.

Merry Christmas
Pastor Jim
